Look Up for inspiration as part of the Carter Observatory Light & Dark event campaign on the side of a bus shelter in Wellington, New Zealand.
Well I have to say I am quite excited with the exposure my image “Look Up” is getting at the moment. You can find it on bus shelters, the front cover of D-Photo Magazine and as a huge banner on the exterior of Carter Observatory!
I headed out to the Wellington South Coast one clear night as I wanted to capture a better version of an image I had done years ago. This time I had a lot more astrophotography experience behind me and had planned for the centre of the Milky Way to be right above me. Seeing it was kind of a self portrait, I had to set the camera up so it was continually shooting frames just like a time-lapse.

I set the camera up, started the timer, and climbed up the boulders to position myself for the photo. I knew I had to stand perfectly still for over 30 seconds to get the shot which wasn’t as easy as it sounds, especially perched high on the boulders like that. But after trying a few positions, I finally climbed down to see what I had captured. The final image worked out better than I had originally anticipated, and this shoot was one of those rare shoots where everything goes right!
